From 2015 to 2020, I created location-based Geofilter graphics for use on the Snapchat app.
I started making crude designs using Google Drawings in high school until I picked up Adobe Illustrator in college. Making Geofilters helped me learn Illustrator's breadth of tools & also gave me a blank canvas to experiment with a variety of design styles.
The locations of my Geofilter designs were determined by requests from friends or observations from my travels. Most of my Geofilters are found throughout California, but I also have created Geofilters well beyond the state borders. Take a look at a map of all my Geofilters!
Before starting each of my 234 Geofilter designs, I conducted extensive research into a particular location so that each design is customized to be unique to that particular location. This often includes references to a city's attractions and history.
Once a Geofilter design was accepted by Snapchat, it can be used by any Snapchat user within a certain Geofence to decorate their pictures and videos. Unfortunately, Snapchat discontinued Community Geofilters sometime in 2023, so you can no longer submit new Geofilters nor view the usage stats for your accepted Geofilters (you can still use existing Geofilters, though!).
