Between Two Worlds

Exploring my Filipino heritage through design

In April 2023, I was approached by Megan Reyes to create cover art for her Between Two Worlds audio documentary, which examines the Filipino-American experience in parallel with the Philippines women’s national team’s FIFA Women's World Cup debut in 2023. It connects threads of identity, history, achievement, and hope through the lens of sport.

It was very important to Megan to involve Filipino-Americans in the creation of Between Two Worlds. As a Filipino immigrant myself, this project was the first time I got to use graphic design to express my proud Filipino heritage.

2023 North American Soccer Business and Media Awards, Best Storytelling finalist

The Philippines and the world of soccer fandom are both very rich & deeply rooted in tradition. The chrome canvases of the colorful jeepneys that litter Manila traffic and the intricate weaving patterns of indigenous tribes stood out to me the most for the project. I then molded these aspects of Filipino culture with the colorful tifos & scarves that faithful soccer fans display during matchday.

|| FIRST ROUND MIX-AND-MATCH

For this project, I deviated from my usual design process. I determined that a "mix-and-match" approach was most appropriate for a design as complex as this one. In the first round, I presented Megan with three different design concepts that would serve as the main focal point of the podcast cover. I then presented three different design styles that can be adapted for any of the three concepts that were chosen.
